Meanwhile, Dragon Quest IX is Announced
I reported last week that Dragon Quest series music composer Koichi Sugiyama let it slip during an interview that Yuji Horii was working on Dragon Quest IX. What console the game will appear on is now a question that holds a magical levitation power over the money in people's wallets. It is a decision that will affect publishers as well.
Western skeptics have been talking, as of late, about how the "Japanese" style of videogame -- traditional RPGs and the like -- will probably be quarantined on PlayStation 3, while the Wii is used to churn out new ideas and the Xbox 360 will be stocked with Hollywood-blockbuster-caliber hits. There is a Dragon Quest spin-off -- called Dragon Quest Swords -- in the works for Wii, though it is certainly more of a "new idea": an action-RPG where you wave the controller like a sword. Series producer Yuji Horii had, last year at Tokyo Game Show, given a video testimonial about how great he thought the console was; he said he planned to make a game for it. Whether that game was Dragon Quest Swords or something else is an excellent question.
Dragon Quest IX, as per Sugiyama's information, is currently deep into production. And just last Sunday night, Yuji Horii confirmed this to a host on J-Wave radio. Always the gentleman, Horii said little more than, "Yes, we're most definitely working on it. You will know more soon."
So there you have it. It is officially confirmed.
