Anyone who has ever played a Metal Gear Solid game knows just how much director Hideo Kojima loves cut scenes. During the first three games, there were plenty of moments when players could simply put down their controller and watch one of the lengthy video sequences, some of which lasted over half an hour. But if you weren't a fan of that element in the earlier MGS games, it looks as though you should probably stay far, far away from the upcoming MGS4.
According to CVG, MGS4 will feature several cut scenes that clock in around the 90 minute mark. That's right, several. It's well known that at one point in his life, Kojima wanted to become a film director but, really, it seems a little excessive to include the equivalent of several feature-length films in the game. Thankfully, the report says that the scenes are skippable, although it also claims they are "some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming." So those who like them will be pleased, while those who don't can just skip past.
A while ago, Kojima said that he wasn't satisfied with the storage capacity available on Blu-Ray, and it looks like we now know why. Early reports about the game have claimed that it will do the unthinkable and actually tie up all of the loose ends from the first three games in a satisfying way and, if that's true, the length of the cut scenes in probably necessary. But still, 90 minutes?
